The Dandelion Cranes, inseparable twins known for their vivid colours and their iconic blue, dandelion-like feather crowns that drifted away like seeds on the breeze. Their fiery red and burnt orange fan-shaped wings allowed them to soar through the sky with unmatched grace and speed, unfolding with the delicate sound of a pleated paper fan.
Paired with the Mimic Moth, the chameleon of the Lepidoptera family, famous for its ability to change appearance by imitating the flowers it rested on. Living in large, caring colonies, these lively moths fluttered day and night among Moon Orchids and Lilies-of-Dusk, creating a mesmerising dance of colour.

Together, these tiles tell the story of two enchanting species: one gliding through the sky in perfect harmony, the other blending effortlessly into a world of ever-changing blossoms. A captivating combination to hang side by side, bringing charm, imagination, and a touch of natural poetry to any space.

Tile Extinct Animals Dandelion Cranes

Moooi x Royal Delft present a unique collection: the original Delft Blue tiles from Royal Delft from Moooi's Extinct Animals collection. Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, together they form a unique collection.

The Extinct Animals: Dandelion Cranes

"The Dandelion Cranes were a part of the Gruiformes order that contains a considerable number of living and extinct bird families. Dandelion Cranes were known to always come in pairs and to be vivacious animals. Born as twins, Dandelion Cranes were inseparable until they found their mate and coupled with them. Rarely, over two Dandelion Cranes were spotted at the same time. The cranes preferred only their twin or mate’s company.

The Dandelion Cranes were easily recognised thanks to their blue feathery crown on top of their heads. As far as history records, no other species of cranes sported the shimmering blue plumage crowns of the Dandelion Cranes. The bloodline of the blue crowned Extinct Animal still flows through the Balearica line, but with different coloured crowns. Another unique trait of that blue crown is that the feathers resembled and behaved like dandelion fluff. At the end of the growing stage, a crown feather would come loose. Instead of falling to the ground, it would drift away on a breeze. Like a fluffy dandelion seed. Hence the name Dandelion Cranes.

The most spectacular feature of the Cranes was not their crowns, but their unique colouration and fan-like wings. Fiery red and burned orange contrasted with the deep blue feathers and crown. The uncommon pleating of their fan-like wings not only looked beautiful; it gave the cranes unmatched speeds in the sky. When unfolding their wings, it even sounded like a pleated paper fan spreading out." - Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.

Tile Extinct Animals Mimic Moth

Moooi x Royal Delft present a unique collection: the original Delft Blue tiles from Royal Delft from Moooi's Extinct Animals collection. Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, together they form a unique collection.

Tile Extinct Animals: Mimic Moth

Mimic Moths were the “Chameleons of the Lepidoptera family”. They loved to flutter day and night, unlike its nocturnal brothers and sisters. It was known for its ever-changing appearance by mimicking the flower it was resting on and always fluttering around in high numbers. So, it took a long time before travellers realised the lively moths they encountered were the same animal. Mimic Moths were social creatures that lived in sizeable colonies and took care of each other.

"Most moths are engaged by light, but bright colours and patterns of now-long-gone flowers drew in the Mimic Moth. Only during the night-flower season, the extinct animal was seen at night. Favourite late-bloomers of the Mimic Moth were the Moon Orchid, a bright pink flower with bright yellow spots, and Lily-of-Dusk, with a pastel rainbow of different coloured petals.

The Moon Orchid only bloomed when the moon was visible in the sky, hence the name. The Lillies-of-Dusk would open during sunset and would close again at sunrise. Creating a colourful playground with their multi-colour petals for the flutters of Mimic Moths." -Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.
