Memento Blue Pebble

Subtle, light, handy, striking and unobtrusive at the same time. An organic shape with a compact seal. Stylishly crafted design. Symbolically decorated.

A clay paste is poured into a specially made plaster mould, the inside of which is shaped like a Pebble. The plaster mold sucks water out of the clay mass; a firm skin is formed against the plaster wall. When this skin has reached a sufficient thickness after some time, the rest of the porridge is poured out of the mold.

The suction effect of the plaster mold continues until the clay skin of the mold is released. At that moment the mold can be opened, releasing the Pebble.

Subsequently, the existing casting seams are manually updated and sponged nice and smooth. A precise work that determines the final shape of the Pebble.

The Pebble gets a special layer of diluted clay called ‘engobe’. The product is then placed in the oven for the first time and fired to a temperature of 1160 ° C. After 24 hours, the product, which is now called ‘biscuit’, is removed from the oven.

The pottery painters hand-paint the traditional Royal Delft decorations on the Pebble. They do this with special brushes made of sable and squirrel hair and a black paint based on cobalt oxide. The cobalt in the paint undergoes a chemical reaction in the oven that changes the color from black to blue. Then the Pebble goes into the oven again.

The last step of our production process is quality control. Every product is inspected from top to bottom to determine whether it can be sold as a Premium Royal Delft product, the hallmark of quality.
