Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. The Extinct Animals: Golden Tiger

Golden Tigers were rumoured to live on every continent ages ago. This friendly, but socially awkward animal was known for its golden fur and eyes. Mainly, his eyes stood out. Big and round, shimmering like molten gold. Endlessly curious, Golden Tigers always seemed to be on the road. Which was probably why they were sighted everywhere. As far as reports go, Golden Tigers seemed to prefer a healthy diet of green leaves and yellow flowers. A rare trait for an animal coming from a carnivorous family. But when a traveller once sighted a Tiger lounging in the sun, in a rare moment of rest, he spotted blue birds and baby fawns nestled against its golden coat. Napping together peacefully.  Golden Tigers befriended anything and anyone. An old study stated that the friendly Tiger wasn’t always fully aware of his big and imposing form, scaring animals away. But when given time, and a few good glances at those big round eyes, other animals realised the Golden Tiger simply asked for friendship. Almost in an innocent, childlike way.– Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals

Tile Extinct Animals Armoured Boar

Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, together they form a unique collection.

The Extinct Animals: Armoured Boar

"The first time an Armoured Boar was spotted by the human eye, the man didn’t know whether to hug it or run! Cute as a button with its dainty legs and snout, teardrop eyes and goofy ears, yet shielded by a tough armoured coat…

Studies from the past suggest that its coat was a protection developed over time as a weapon against animals of pray. This little fella had to toughen up to avoid being jumped or grabbed from above by tigers or wolfs, depending on its habitat. Remarkably, while its physical looks and skills evolved as a form of defence, its amiable nature remained pretty much unchanged. Armoured Boars were no more aggressive than pets. Highly intelligent and social, they showed hostility only when threatened or if their offspring was in danger.

Their striped coat, on the upper part of the body, was covered in black and golden scales, which gave it an ornamental appearance. Males with the shiniest outfits, in fact, were known to be favoured by the females. On the other hand, ‘boys’ developed a liking for ‘girls’ with particularly fine trotters, resembling miniature stilettos…" - Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.

Tile Extinct Animals Queen Cobra

Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, together they form a unique collection.

The Extinct Animals: Queen Cobra

"Queen Cobras were majestic looking snakes named after Queen Tanjii of Kemet, because their long coiling hairs resembled the queen’s hairstyle. According to old scriptures, the snakes were gold-coloured and didn’t have scales. Their skin seemed made of dried grass. With these characteristics, you can imagine the surprise when people found out the cobras were excellent swimmers. In fact, they would swim thousands of kilometres to lay their eggs on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.

Humans and Queen Cobras co-existed in peace. The snakes would calmly slither through their villages, not harming anyone, and appeared curious about everything. In fact, the Queen Cobras loved to get to higher altitudes to inspect their surroundings. Including climbing up the tallest person they could find and settle on their head, using them as watchtowers. They were very trusting animals. Their favourite resting places however were at the lowest places possible. They preferred slumbering at the banks of the Nile. The tall grasses resembling their skin camouflaging them.

Although Queen Cobras were very trusting towards humans; they hardly ever entered their homes. Most likely because they preferred open skies. Old pagan beliefs state that pregnant women that woke up to find Queen Cobra curls near their bed were blessed with healthy children. Another myth said finding punctured slither marks in your crops meant fruitful harvests for five seasons." - Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.

Tile Extinct Animals Mimic Moth

Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, together they form a unique collection.

Tile Extinct Animals: Mimic Moth

Mimic Moths were the “Chameleons of the Lepidoptera family”. They loved to flutter day and night, unlike its nocturnal brothers and sisters. It was known for its ever-changing appearance by mimicking the flower it was resting on and always fluttering around in high numbers. So, it took a long time before travellers realised the lively moths they encountered were the same animal. Mimic Moths were social creatures that lived in sizeable colonies and took care of each other.

"Most moths are engaged by light, but bright colours and patterns of now-long-gone flowers drew in the Mimic Moth. Only during the night-flower season, the extinct animal was seen at night. Favourite late-bloomers of the Mimic Moth were the Moon Orchid, a bright pink flower with bright yellow spots, and Lily-of-Dusk, with a pastel rainbow of different coloured petals.

The Moon Orchid only bloomed when the moon was visible in the sky, hence the name. The Lillies-of-Dusk would open during sunset and would close again at sunrise. Creating a colourful playground with their multi-colour petals for the flutters of Mimic Moths." -Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.

The Extinct Animals: Dodo Pavone

"The Dodo Pavone’s life was a dream come true. Imagine living for millions of years on the exotic island paradise of Mauritius, quietly strolling around in a luscious forest and along a crystalline sea. Then visualize being the biggest and strongest animal of the island, in harmony with your surroundings, feeling like the king of the world...

They were never in a hurry. If they had to go somewhere, the entire family would follow, gently wobbling along, curious and fearless. It has been reported that the first time a Dodo Pavone saw a human being, he just wobbled straight up to him without hesitation, even giving a small nod, almost saying: “hi!”

They were amiable, friendly in appearance. Their natural outfit was a soft plumage of silvery feathers, with different nuances of grey, blue, beige and white, decorated with a cute pompom at the tail. Their colourful, rounded beaks were greatly admired by the first settlers, who were known to collect Dodo eggs as vases for their prized tulips." - Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.

Tile Extinct Animals Dwarf Rhino

Moooi x Royal Delft present a unique collection: the original Delft Blue tiles from Royal Delft from Moooi's Extinct Animals collection. Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, together they form a unique collection.

The Extinct Animals: Dwarf Rhino

"The arrival of the first rhinoceros in Europe marks the appearance of many drawings picturing a horned creature with hard plates covering its body. Its exotic traits and combat appearance ignited the imagination of many.

The smallest of the rhinoceros' family, the Dwarf Rhino weighed only a few hundred kilos that, compared to the 2.3 tons of some of its relatives, made it a real dwarf of the species. To think that the first time it was spotted, the explorers made fun of its dimensions by comparing it to other rhinos they had seen. They even thought about stroking it, regretting it immediately after the appalled animal charged them, its plated body gleaming in the sun.

The unique structure of the ancient skin and the typical grey-brown folds that section its body were truly martial-looking, bearing the unique appearance of a suit of armour. Males “polished” their outfit especially well during mating season, before a decisive battle, by rubbing it on rough terrain, then bathing it and letting it dry in the sun."  - Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.

Tile Extinct Animals Dandelion Cranes

Moooi x Royal Delft present a unique collection: the original Delft Blue tiles from Royal Delft from Moooi's Extinct Animals collection. Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, together they form a unique collection.

The Extinct Animals: Dandelion Cranes

"The Dandelion Cranes were a part of the Gruiformes order that contains a considerable number of living and extinct bird families. Dandelion Cranes were known to always come in pairs and to be vivacious animals. Born as twins, Dandelion Cranes were inseparable until they found their mate and coupled with them. Rarely, over two Dandelion Cranes were spotted at the same time. The cranes preferred only their twin or mate’s company.

The Dandelion Cranes were easily recognised thanks to their blue feathery crown on top of their heads. As far as history records, no other species of cranes sported the shimmering blue plumage crowns of the Dandelion Cranes. The bloodline of the blue crowned Extinct Animal still flows through the Balearica line, but with different coloured crowns. Another unique trait of that blue crown is that the feathers resembled and behaved like dandelion fluff. At the end of the growing stage, a crown feather would come loose. Instead of falling to the ground, it would drift away on a breeze. Like a fluffy dandelion seed. Hence the name Dandelion Cranes.

The most spectacular feature of the Cranes was not their crowns, but their unique colouration and fan-like wings. Fiery red and burned orange contrasted with the deep blue feathers and crown. The uncommon pleating of their fan-like wings not only looked beautiful; it gave the cranes unmatched speeds in the sky. When unfolding their wings, it even sounded like a pleated paper fan spreading out." - Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.

Tile Extinct Animals Pogo Goat

Moooi x Royal Delft present a unique collection: the original Delft Blue tiles from Royal Delft from Moooi's Extinct Animals collection. Inspired by beautiful drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles were designed and handmade in the studio in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, together they form a unique collection.

The Extinct Animals: Pogo Goats

"Pogo Goats, with their fluffy coats and conch shell horns, lived high in the mountains of Alkebulan most of the time. This migratory animal would move to the sea cliffs of the southern-most point on the continent during the coldest months of the year. But no matter their habitat, the Goats always seemed to prefer cliffs. The steeper the better.

Where Pogo Goats got their name from remains a mystery to this day. Some say it came from their migration patterns, leaving tracks that looked like lined-up dance steps. Others claim to have spotted groups of Pogo Goats dancing on the sides of the steepest cliffs, utterly fearless. The dancing goats celebrated life by living on the edge, literally.

The Pogo Goat’s shell horns would turn the whistle of the wind into the sweetest music, which explains their ongoing dancing. But the elaborate horns’ downside was their size. It was a challenge for the Pogo Goats not to get stuck in the mountain cracks and fall off when prying loose. But when this happened, they fell into the clouds smiling and peacefully drifted away; hooves moving as if still dancing, never to be seen again." - Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.
