Inspired by magnificent drawings from The Museum of Extinct Animals, eight ceramic tiles have been designed and handcrafted in the workshop in Delft. Each tile represents one of these beautiful animal species in Delft Blue, and together they form a unique collection.
The Extinct Animals: Dwarf Rhino
“The arrival of the first rhinoceros in Europe marks the appearance of many drawings picturing a horned creature with hard plates covering its body. Its exotic traits and combat appearance ignited the imagination of many.
The smallest of the rhinoceros’ family, the Dwarf Rhino weighed only a few hundred kilos that, compared to the 2.3 tons of some of its relatives, made it a real dwarf of the species. To think that the first time it was spotted, the explorers made fun of its dimensions by comparing it to other rhinos they had seen. They even thought about stroking it, regretting it immediately after the appalled animal charged them, its plated body gleaming in the sun.
The unique structure of the ancient skin and the typical grey-brown folds that section its body were truly martial-looking, bearing the unique appearance of a suit of armour. Males “polished” their outfit especially well during mating season, before a decisive battle, by rubbing it on rough terrain, then bathing it and letting it dry in the sun.” – Moooi The Museum of Extinct Animals.

De Porceleyne Fles in Delft
Centuries-old craftsmanship lives on in De Porceleyne Fles. The screen printing technique, with its origins in eighteenth-century England, is still an essential part of the decorating process. Here, heritage, precision and craft come together in every ceramic object.
Even when the screen printing technique is used, the hand of the Royal Delft master painter is still part of the design. The first design is put on paper with a brush, using the same black paint. Once a final design has been made, it is sent to the printer. The printer scans it digitally and then turns it into a screen print.
This is divided into four separate layers for the four different shades of blue. It is then printed onto plastic films, and the films are exposed onto a screen printing frame. In this way the design transfers from the film to the frame. This is done four times for the different shades of blue, after which a carrier layer is added on top. That carrier holds the entire design together.
The transfer is then applied to the glazed product, after which it fuses with the glaze layer during the second firing.
