This graceful Proud Mary is part of the Black and White Reflection Series and showcases a new method of decoration applied by Royal Delft. The objects are finished with a powerful tone-on-tone reflection effect in black and white, featuring the traditional and widely recognized flora and fauna decoration style. The selection of objects in this series comes from the BlueD1653 collection, designed by Dutch designers Arian Brekveld and Koens & Middelkoop. Together with the Proud Mary, the two beautiful Collar Bowls create a powerful series.
The design | Koens & Middelkoop
Koens & Middelkoop, a prominent Dutch design duo with an impressive portfolio, play an important role within the Black and White Reflection Series with their Proud Mary. In close collaboration with Royal Delft, Koens & Middelkoop designed the world-famous Proud Mary, available in both transfer and hand-painted versions.
Proud Mary is named after Mary II, the wife of Stadtholder William III and a great lover and collector of Delft Blue during the Golden Age. This stylish figurine was born from the desire to give Royal Delft's iconic Delft Blue a contemporary look. The design consists of four interchangeable elements: the skirt, the bodice, the collar, and the head.
In 2024, Proud Mary underwent a contemporary transformation under the leadership of the Royal Delft Design Team. The figurine is now available in completely black or white, featuring the powerful tone-on-tone floral decoration. The new decoration technique highlights a reflective effect, in which the traditional flora and fauna decoration style truly comes into its own.
De Porceleyne Fles in Delft
Centuries-old craftsmanship lives on in De Porceleyne Fles. The screen printing technique, with its origins in eighteenth-century England, is still an essential part of the decorating process. Here, heritage, precision and craft come together in every ceramic object.
Even when the screen printing technique is used, the hand of the Royal Delft master painter is still part of the design. The first design is put on paper with a brush, using the same black paint. Once a final design has been made, it is sent to the printer. The printer scans it digitally and then turns it into a screen print.
This is divided into four separate layers for the four different shades of blue. It is then printed onto plastic films, and the films are exposed onto a screen printing frame. In this way the design transfers from the film to the frame. This is done four times for the different shades of blue, after which a carrier layer is added on top. That carrier holds the entire design together.
The transfer is then applied to the glazed product, after which it fuses with the glaze layer during the second firing.
