A first in Dutch stamp history: PostNL launches the first stamp made of Delft Blue ceramic
The Delft Blue Ceramic Stamp is more than a stamp. It is a real ceramic, thin Delft Blue tile in stamp format. With it, the issue brings one of the Netherlands' best-known craft products to a surprising new format. Measuring 5×5 centimetres and 5 millimetres thick, the stamp is larger than a regular Dutch stamp. The issue comes in a luxury passe-partout presentation pack and adds a special first to Dutch stamp history.
17th-century craftsmanship in miniature
The decoration of the Delft Blue Ceramic Stamp was designed especially for this issue. The design shows a floral bouquet with a bird, inspired by motifs that have been used on Royal Delft's Delft Blue earthenware since the 17th century.
Maurice Unck, Director of Mail Netherlands at PostNL: “With this issue we show that a stamp can be much more than a means of franking mail. For the first time, we are releasing a stamp made of real ceramic. That makes this issue a special combination of Dutch heritage, innovation and the joy of collecting.”
Hessel Hoekstra, CEO Royal Delft: For us this is a special commission, because we get to translate our craft and Delft Blue design into a truly unique object. PostNL and Royal Delft bring together two forms of craftsmanship and creative design: the rich history of the Dutch postage stamp and the centuries-old tradition of Delft Blue. We are proud of this first and of this beautiful stamp.
